The latest Newcastle United news as the former midfielder is attracting the interest of clubs around Europe and was back on the scoresheet this weekend.
Former Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is catching the eye in Turkey, just over a year after leaving St James’ Park.
The 32-year-old completed a move from Newcastle to Nottingham Forest last January, but his time at the City Ground didn’t go to plan. He made eight appearances for the club before being frozen out of the squad.
This summer, he was released from his contract and signed for Turkish side Rizespor on a free transfer. He has since impressed for his new side, scoring twice in 23 appearances in the Turkish Super Lig causing some speculation over where his future could lie.
His most recent goal came in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Kayserispor. Shelvey blasted a free kick from just outside of the area past the goalkeeper to give his side a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute of the game.
The stunning strike comes amid reports that the midfielder is attracting interest from the likes of Galatasaray and Fenerbahce. He has less than six months remaining on his deal, having only penned a contract with Rizespor for one year.
According to the Telegraph, if Shelvey opts to stay in Turkey then Galatasaray and Fenerbahce could be options, however, other clubs in Europe are also tracking his progress. His contract situation means that he can talk to overseas clubs about his future.
Shelvey spent a total of seven years at Newcastle after joining from Swansea City back in January 2016. He played 202 times at the club, scoring 18 goals.
His goal from Rizespor this weekend was one of two spectacular strikes he has scored this season. His only other goal for the club came from his own half after spotting the Istanbulspor goalkeeper off his line and finding the back of the net from his own half.
