Buzz Is Building: Maryland Basketball Hires Texas A&M Coach To Replace Kevin Willard
Buzz is officially building in College Park. No April fooling.
Zak Failla 04/01/2025 6:41 p.m.
Buzz Williams, a proven winner with stops at Marquette, Virginia Tech, and most recently Texas A&M, has been named the new head coach of the Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball team, school officials announced Tuesday, April 1.
The announcement comes just days after Kevin Willard’s exit for Villanova following a Sweet 16 run that captivated Terps Nation.
Now, Maryland is turning to a coach with 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, four Sweet 16 runs, and a reputation for gritty, disciplined basketball.
“It is an honor and privilege to be named the head coach of the University of Maryland men’s basketball team,” Williams said. “I promise to uphold the history of Maryland basketball and make Terp Nation proud with the men who represent this institution.”
Williams, 52, is coming off a 23-win season and second-round NCAA Tournament appearance with the Aggies. He was twice named SEC Coach of the Year and holds a career record of 373-228 over 18 seasons.
“For his age and his number of years as a head coach, Williams is the active leader in total victories and ranks (number two) in NCAA Tournament games and NCAA Tournament victories,” according to university officials.

“That man right there is one of the greatest people you’ll ever meet … One of the greatest coaches of all time in basketball in general … And he has changed my life and changed (all of) our lives,” he said.
“Coach Buzz, you mean everything to me … No matter what, I know you’ll be one call away, one text away, and no matter what anyone says, he’s one of the greatest … No one can change that or take that away from him.”
“His incredible record of success at three prominent basketball programs speaks for itself,” said interim Athletic Director Colleen Sorem. “But we were equally impressed with his tireless work ethic and dedication to building a program the right way.”
Rant over about administration. I love Buzz Williams’ energy and his suits. I think he’ll do well with the fans and he really has never failed at any program he’s been at.
A native of Van Alstyne, Texas, Williams has coached or developed 16 NBA players, founded the nationally recognized Buzz’s Bunch program for children with special needs, and is known for connecting with student-athletes far beyond the court.
The Terps will introduce Williams at a press conference on Wednesday, April 2 at Noon on the main court of XFINITY Center.
Buzz Williams prayed for TEN MINUTES over each of his Texas A&M players after their season came to an end against Michigan.
“Finding the right person to lead Maryland Men’s Basketball was critical to the continued success of our program, both on and off the court,” President Darryll Pines added.
“With an exemplary record of competitive success and a demonstrated commitment to providing leadership and development to our student-athletes, Coach Buzz Williams is the ideal coach to lead us forward.
