Arne Slot is gearing up for a new challenge

Even before he was formally named Jurgen Klopp’s successor at Liverpool, Arne Slot talked about the risks associated with managers feeling “overworked”.

At the end of the current campaign, Slot will replace Feyenoord, as Klopp has decided to step down and take a break from manager following nine grueling years at Anfield. The German stated he was “running out of energy” when he announced his intention to leave in January.

That’s not the only argument Klopp has offered. Between departing Barcelona in 2012 and joining Bayern Munich in 2013, Pep Guardiola is well-known for taking a year off.

“I believe that nearly every head coach of a premier league team is close to burnout. A head coach’s job is really difficult,” Slot told the Algemeen Dagblad, a Dutch publication.

Particularly in front of so many influential people each week at a premier club. It turns out that I really went through this during the previous season at Feyenoord; it was difficult.”

Most importantly, Slot isn’t implying that Liverpool will pose any more challenge than Rotterdam and the Eredivisie now do.

“That would also have been the case if I had stayed at Feyenoord,” he stated. “At De Kuip, there are also big expectations. People anticipate successful outcomes and good football. That has frequently worked, but you are always improving as a trainer.”

As his first overseas transfer of his career, Slot hasn’t held back while discussing his upcoming move to Liverpool. Last Friday, he stated that an announcement is just a “matter of days” away.

“It takes more than a simple shopping list and going to the store,” he said.

These kinds of events need to be scheduled appropriately. Though it hasn’t been announced yet, don’t worry—it will surely take place shortly.”

When the Eredivisie comes to an end on Sunday, Feyenoord will play their final game under Slot’s direction at De Kuip against Excelsior. On the final day of the 2023–24 Premier League, Wolves will visit Anfield, and Klopp will be captaining Liverpool for the last time that afternoon.
